What Happens When You Take the Abortion Pill?  

If you’re considering the abortion pill, you may be wondering what actually happens after you take it. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more prepared and make an informed decision.  

The abortion pill involves two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.  

What Happens After the First Pill?

The first medication, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to maintain the pregnancy.  

Some women don’t experience significant symptoms immediately after taking mifepristone. Others may begin to experience cramping or bleeding.  

The second medication, misoprostol, is typically taken 24 to 48 hours later. It causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.  

What Will I Feel?

Bleeding and cramping are expected during the abortion pill process and can be heavier than a normal period.  

Other possible side effects include:  

  • Nausea or vomiting  
  • Diarrhea  
  • Headache  
  • Dizziness  
  • Fever or chills  
  • Fatigue  

Every woman’s experience is different. It’s important to understand the possible side effects and know when to seek medical attention.  

What If Something Goes Wrong?

Complications can occur, including heavy bleeding, infection or an incomplete abortion. An ectopic pregnancy—when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus—can also be a serious medical emergency.  

That’s one reason it’s important to know how far along you are and where the pregnancy is located before taking abortion medication.  

A limited ultrasound can provide important information about your pregnancy, including its approximate age, development and location.  

What If I Change My Mind?

If you’ve taken the first pill, mifepristone, but don’t want to continue with the abortion, contact a medical professional as soon as possible.
