The Abortion Pill: What Every Father Needs to Know

If your partner is talking about the abortion pill, or if you’re searching because you suspect she might be, this guide answers the most common questions we hear from fathers at our three DFW locations. It’s organized as questions, with short direct answers followed by what you actually need to know.

What is the abortion pill?

It’s not one pill. It’s a two-drug regimen: mifepristone followed 24 to 48 hours later by misoprostol that ends a pregnancy in the first weeks. The first drug stops the pregnancy from developing. The second drug causes the body to expel it.

Most out-of-state clinics use this method for up to ten weeks of pregnancy. The process happens at home, usually over a 24 to 48 hour window, and involves cramping and bleeding that can be heavy.

Abortion is not legal in the state of Texas. This means that clients must find other means of seeking an abortion. Before seeking abortion pills, determining the location and viability of the pregnancy is crucial and we offer a conclusive ultrasound to determine if the pregnancy is in the uterus.

If she’s already taken mifepristone, can the pregnancy still be saved?

Sometimes, yes. There is a protocol called Abortion Pill Reversal that uses progesterone to counter the effects of mifepristone, but only before the second drug (misoprostol) is taken. The window is narrow: usually within 72 hours of taking the first pill.

If she’s expressed regret after taking the first dose, time matters more than anything else. You can call us at (972) 333-6727 any time. This is not something to research for an hour. Call.

What is my role as the father in this?

You don’t have legal authority over her decision, but you do have voice. Texas law does not give the father a right to consent to or block an abortion involving an adult woman. But that’s a legal question, not a relational one. She is making this decision in part because of what she believes about you, your relationship, and her future. That is something you can speak into honestly, without pressure.

What if I disagree with her decision?

Tell her calmly, once, completely. Then listen. Most men in this situation either say nothing (and resent it later) or say too much (and push her away). The middle path is hard but possible: share your heart fully one time, ask her to share hers fully, and then keep showing up. Withdrawal is not a strategy.

If you’re wrestling with how to actually have this conversation our male advocates are a great place where you have someone to walk through your conversations with.

What happens after, emotionally, for the man?

Often more than men expect. Research on post-abortion psychological effects in men shows significant rates of grief, anxiety, depression, and complicated emotional aftermath, even among men who initially supported the decision. One peer-reviewed study found measurable improvements in forgiveness, grief, and anxiety after a structured intervention, suggesting the emotional impact is real and treatable but rarely talked about.
