Plan B
What is Plan B?
Plan B, also known as the “morning after pill” is a form of emergency contraception. Plan B is a drug called levonorgestrel and is intended to be taken by mouth in typically 1 dose within 72 hours after having unprotected sex.
How Does It Work?
Depending on where you are in your cycle, Plan B can:
1) prevent or delay ovulation,
2) interfere with the ovulation of the egg, and
3) it can possibly prevent the implantation of an already fertilized egg in the uterus by altering the lining.
Plan B is not the same as RU486 (the abortion pill). Plan B does not stop the development of a fertilized egg once it’s implanted in the uterus, but may prevent a newly formed life from implanting in the uterus.
What Plan B Doesn’t Do
If you are already pregnant, Plan B does not work. and is not recommended.

- Plan B does not keep you from getting pregnant if you have sex after taking the pill
- Plan B does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
- The drug can produce significant side effects including fatigue, nausea, headaches, disruption of normal menstrual flow and abdominal pain.
