How Far Along Can You Be to Take the Abortion Pill?

If you’re considering the abortion pill, one of the first things you may want to know is how far along you are and whether the abortion pill is an option at your stage of pregnancy.

The abortion pill is generally used during early pregnancy, but pregnancy dating isn’t always as straightforward as it may seem.

How Do You Know How Far Along You Are?

Pregnancy is typically dated from the first day of your last menstrual period. But if your periods are irregular, you aren’t sure of the date, or your cycle is different than usual, your estimate may not be exact.

An ultrasound can provide a more accurate estimate of how far along the pregnancy is.

Why Does Pregnancy Dating Matter?

Knowing your gestational age can help you understand what options may be available to you and what kind of medical care you may need.

An ultrasound can also provide information that a pregnancy test cannot. It may show:

  • Whether the pregnancy is developing
  • Whether a heartbeat is detectable
  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
  • The approximate age of the pregnancy

This information can be especially important before taking abortion medication.

What If I’m Not Sure How Far Along I Am?

You don’t have to guess.

Prestonwood Pregnancy Center offers free, confidential pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds for qualifying clients. An ultrasound can help you get a clearer picture of your pregnancy before you make a decision.
