Can I Afford This? A Father’s Guide to Real Financial Help in DFW
Fear about money is one of the biggest reasons expectant fathers spiral. So, let’s not just tell you it’ll be okay, let’s build an actual plan.
What we tell every dad who sits down with us
Every father who walks into one of our centers scared about money hears the same four things from us, because they’re the four things that actually move the needle:
Write a budget. Not a five-year plan — just an honest look at what’s coming in and going out. Our advocates will sit with you and do this together. We’re not handing you a worksheet and walking away; we’ll help you find where costs can actually come down.
Let yourself dream about your career, not just your next paycheck. Survival mode makes men stop thinking past Friday. But the dad who’s also asking “where do I want to be in three years” tends to make better decisions today than the one who’s only firefighting.
Lean on partner organizations. You don’t have to find every resource yourself. We already know who does what well in this city — that’s what we’re here for.
Know that most organizations won’t just hand you a job. That’s not how it works, and it’s not fair to expect it. What they will do is walk with you — training, coaching, connections. The Texas Workforce Commission is a good example: through their Workforce Solutions offices in Dallas and Fort Worth, you get free career counseling, resume help, and access to WorkInTexas.com, one of the largest job-matching systems in the state. It’s not a handout. It’s a hand.
Underneath all four of these is the same thing: the best path forward is sitting down with someone who’ll walk with you. Not a checklist. A person.

Job Training and Placement
We love Watermark CDC. Their Community Development Corporation offers real job coaching and placement support across DFW, with particular strength in South Dallas, and it’s one of the first places our advocates point men toward.
If you’re looking for a direct source of jobs: Texas Workforce Commission’s Workforce Solutions offices — Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas and Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County — offer free career counseling, resume help, and short-term training, all at no cost. Again: they won’t hand you a job. But they’ll help you find one, and they’ll help you get ready for it.
Housing and Basic Needs
Catholic Charities of Dallas and Catholic Charities Fort Worth offer emergency financial assistance and housing support, regardless of your faith background.
The North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank run pantries across the metroplex.
Dial 2-1-1 (211 Texas) to get connected to housing, utility, and food help based on your ZIP code.
Health Coverage
Texas CHIP and Medicaid cover pregnant women and young children more broadly than most people assume. If you’ve written yourself off because you think you make too much, it’s still worth a call to check.
A Word on Timing
Most of the fear around a new baby isn’t really about lifelong cost, but it’s about this month’s cash flow. Diapers and formula in year one are real expenses, but they’re predictable ones, and a lot of them are subsidized through programs like ours. You don’t need to solve the next five years tonight. You need this month’s plan.
Build It with Us
This is what our advocates actually do — not hand you a list and wish you luck, but sit down, look at your real numbers, and walk you to the right door. It’s part of what happens in the first few sessions of our Fatherhood Coaching Program.
Call (972) 428-4700 or email ppcmens@prestonwood.org. Bring your real numbers. We’ll build a real plan with you.
