Do You Need an Ultrasound Before Taking the Abortion Pill?

If you’re considering the abortion pill, you may be wondering whether you need an ultrasound first. An ultrasound can provide important information about your pregnancy that a pregnancy test alone cannot.

Before taking abortion medication, knowing how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is developing and where it is located can help you better understand your situation.

What Can an Ultrasound Tell You?

A limited ultrasound may help determine:

  • How far along you are
  • Whether the pregnancy is developing
  • Whether a heartbeat is detectable
  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus

Knowing this information can be especially important before taking medication to end a pregnancy.

Why Does Pregnancy Location Matter?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. It can become a serious medical emergency.

Abortion medication does not treat an ectopic pregnancy, so knowing where the pregnancy is located is an important part of understanding your situation.

What If I Don’t Know How Far Along I Am?

You may be able to estimate your pregnancy based on the first day of your last menstrual period. But if you have irregular periods or aren’t sure of the date, you may not know exactly how far along you are.

An ultrasound can provide a better estimate of the pregnancy’s gestational age.
