Can I Get Pregnant While I’m on the Birth Control Pill?

Can I Get Pregnant While I’m on the Birth Control Pill?

When it comes to birth control, no method (other than abstinence) is 100% effective. That’s why it’s important to understand how the pill works, what contributes to its effectiveness, and what your options are if you find yourself facing an unexpected pregnancy.

How the birth control pill works

What does the pill actually do? This medication is designed to prevent pregnancy by:

  • Stopping ovulation (releasing an egg each month)
  • Thickening cervical mucus so sperm has a harder time reaching an egg
  • Thinning the uterine lining to make it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant

When taken at the same time every day and without missing a dose, the pill can be up to 99% effective. But in real life, it’s often taken imperfectly and this lowers its effectiveness.

Reasons the pill might fail

Even if you’re cautious and diligent, there are several reasons you could still get pregnant while on the pill:

  • Missed or late pills – Even one missed dose can increase your chances of ovulation.
  • Interactions with medications – Some antibiotics, seizure medications, or herbal supplements can make the pill less effective.
  • Digestive issues – Vomiting or diarrhea soon after taking the pill may prevent your body from absorbing it.
  • Human error – Forgetting a pack, starting late after your period, or inconsistent use all reduce effectiveness.

On average, the pill is only about 91% effective, meaning around 9 in 100 women may become pregnant each year while relying on this method.

I think I might be pregnant…

If you’re experiencing symptoms like nausea, missed periods, or fatigue while taking the pill, it’s possible you could be pregnant. The only way to know for sure is by taking a pregnancy test.

Here at Prestonwood Pregnancy Center, we offer free and confidential pregnancy testing. We use laboratory-quality tests with a 99% accuracy rate, and no insurance is required.
