SNAP, TANF, CHIP & Pregnancy Medicaid

Do you need assistance with food?

Worried about how to afford prenatal care?

Is housing a concern?

The Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex has a wealth of agencies and programs that set up to help those that find themselves in crisis.  Below are a few of the resources that are available should you need them.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP helps individuals and families buy the food they need for good health and nutrition.

Food benefits are loaded onto a card that can be used just like a credit card at any store that accepts SNAP. Once accepted into the program, SNAP benefits are approved from 3 months to 3 years, depending on your income and number of dependents. Most adults utilizing SNAP are required to either be looking for employment or in an approved work program.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

TANF helps families pay for basic living needs.

TANF cash can help you pay for food, clothing, housing, furniture, utilities, transportation, phone, and other basic needs.

To qualify for TANF you must have children 18 and younger in the home and have little or no income.

Similar to SNAP, there are guidelines that families receiving TANF must adhere to such as taking parenting classes, job searching, etc.

Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

CHIP covers services designed to help keep kids healthy.

Services that are covered include dentist visits, eye exams, routine checkups at the doctor, prescription drugs and vaccines, hospital care, and lab tests.

Any adult who is the primary caregiver of an uninsured child can apply (including relatives). Anyone who is under the age of 19 can apply if they live alone. CHIP is free to those that are approved.

Pregnancy Medicaid

Pregnancy Medicaid provides health care benefits for women who are pregnant until 2 months after the birth of the baby.

These benefits include doctors’ visits, prescription medication, labor and delivery, lab tests, hospital care, and rides to the doctor.

Pregnant women with little or no income are eligible to apply.
