Considering an Abortion? Here’s What You Need to Know…

Sofia was one of the first clients to walk through the doors of our newest location in Fort Worth. Pregnant, discouraged and conflicted, she sunk deep into the chair and explained her dilemma. A single mom with significant financial struggles, she came to us feeling scared and overwhelmed.

After receiving a positive pregnancy test confirming what she already knew, she quietly stated her intention to have an abortion.

“This is just not a good time,” she said, her voice shaking.

Maybe you feel like Sofia today. Getting an abortion seems to be the only course of action with the power to take this problem away. It all feels like too much and you just want to wake up from this bad dream. If this is you, you’re certainly not alone. We talk to women every day considering abortion due to financial concerns, fear of telling family and friends, fear of being a single-parent, and many other reasons.

The truth is, terminating your pregnancy is a huge decision that will have both short and long-term effects on you physically and emotionally.

So before you do something you can’t take back, here are some things to consider:

  • What are the three types of abortion and what are the risks?

  1. The abortion pill consists of two different medications and can be taken up to 10 weeks gestation. The first medication is taken at the abortion clinic and the second medication is taken at home 2-3 days later. Side effects and risks include abdominal pain, severe cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, fever, hemorrhaging, infection or incomplete abortion.
  2. Early surgical abortion is referred to as suction or vacuum aspiration and can be performed up to 14 weeks gestation. The doctor uses medication to soften the cervix and then dilates and opens the cervix with a series of metal-dilating rods. This procedure is typically done using both a suction tube and a sharp, spoon-shaped tool.
  3. Late term abortion consists of dilation & evacuation (15+ weeks) and labor induction (2nd and 3rd trimesters). Potential risks include hemorrhaging, infection, uterine rupture, cervical laceration, incomplete abortion, allergic reaction to medication, organ damage, and anesthesia complications.

  • What will I feel during and after the abortion?

Physically, you may experience pain and cramping. Emotionally, you may feel overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or experience feelings of regret. These emotions sometimes surface immediately, and other times later in life.

  • What are all my options?

You have three options when it comes to an unplanned pregnancy. One, you continue the pregnancy and parent, leaning on your support system and resources made available to you through our center. Two, you continue the pregnancy and arrange for an adoption, either within your family or through an adoption agency. And three, you end the pregnancy by having an abortion.

  • What Now?

When faced with a crisis, we often make impulsive decisions based on fear. It’s so important to take the time to stop and think about your options. Making an informed decision is everything. And most always, good decisions are made from information, counsel and time. That’s why at the Prestonwood Pregnancy Center, we’re here for you no matter your decision.
