If you are living in the state of Texas, on Friday, June 24^th, when the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v Wade, it outlawed abortion in Texas immediately according to the Attorney General of Texas.  That means you cannot obtain chemical or surgical abortions in this state.

There have been questions about confidentiality if a woman goes to a clinic, like Prestonwood Pregnancy Center, and shares that she may be seeking an abortion regardless of the Texas law.  At Prestonwood Pregnancy Center, your information is secure, confidential and we will NOT report your pregnancy intentions to any entity.  We are safe.

You may wonder why you would still come to Prestonwood Pregnancy Center if abortion is illegal in Texas? All of our services are free and you can still get a pregnancy test and ultrasound at no cost to you.  This will let you know if you are pregnant, how far along you are, and allow you to discuss your options with our staff.  Our nurses and the doctors that support the center are professional and care.  We also have licensed professional counselors available to you as well.

At Prestonwood Pregnancy Center, we recommend STD testing prior to abortion to prevent undiagnosed STDs from spreading farther into the reproductive system. STD testing prior to an abortion is not necessarily offered.  And when it is, there is a cost.  At Prestonwood Pregnancy Center, we offer free STD testing for two sexually transmitted diseases, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, at our Richardson location.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are the two most common STDs in the United States. They are bacterial diseases which commonly reside in the vaginal opening. We believe it is important for pregnant women to know if they have either one of these diseases, particularly if they are considering having an abortion. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can have dangerous side complications if left untreated. If a woman has an undiagnosed and untreated STD/STI during an abortion or childbirth, those infected cells can travel from the vaginal opening into the uterus. When this occurs and is left untreated, a second condition called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can develop.

With any surgery or medical procedure, there are associated risks. There are two types of abortions: surgical and medical.

A surgical procedure removes the fetus from the uterus through the vagina. It’s typically done using suction and a sharp, spoon-shaped tool (curet).

A medical abortion involves taking medication early in the pregnancy to abort the fetus.

There are several potential risks associated with both medical and surgical abortions, such as:

• Pain
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Post-anesthesia complications
• Uterine atony (failure of the uterus to contract) and subsequent hemorrhage
• Uterine perforation causing potential injuries to adjacent organs (bladder or bowels)
• Cervical laceration
• Failed abortion
• Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)

Potential risks of medical abortion include:

• Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
